Lots of things can go wrong with your site and you can't be online 24/7 to monitor it all...As a webmaster, u need to monitor your site's growth, back-links and many other things.This is why you need to sign up for google's webmaster tools. U will need to verify domain ownership by placing a unique code under head tag and googlebot comes over to verify this. After your domain is verified, u should be able to see your indexed pages, backlinks, crawl errors among other things. it's important that u submit your sitemap to google for easy crawling. U may submit ur site rss feed [atom, xml]...or goto google.com and search for free xml sitemap generator.Get ur sitemap, login to your webmaster dashboard and submit the sitemap. That's all u need to do.
